Vocabulary Syllabus—6th Grade

Rationale: This year we will focus on Latin prefixes, roots and suffixes in an attempt to expand our vocabularies. It is important to know how to construct and deconstruct words from common roots.
Procedure: Each Monday I will introduce the word roots of the week to the class and will pass out some handouts. These are to be put in order into your English binder in a section labeled “Vocabulary.” You will complete the handouts if necessary by Tuesday. Each Thursday you will either have a quiz that will include spelling and definitions or you will have to write a short story using all of the words of the week. These will be assigned on alternating weeks. Every three weeks we will have a cumulative unit.
Schedule:
8/27     Define root, prefix, suffix, etc. Warm up activities—complete handouts.
8/30     Quiz—be able to identify prefixes, roots, and suffixes in words.
9/4       Struct, Tract, Vinc. Complete handouts.
