Class Info
The English program at Christ the King focuses on written and oral communication. In the fall, mechanics and usage takes priority; while in the spring research, writing, and publishing become paramount. We will examine every aspect of writing: narratives, descriptions, plays, newspaper articles, speeches, how-to reports, research papers, poetry, songs, reviews, and even comic books. Original, thoughtful, well-organized pieces will be our constant goal. During the 6th grade year new concepts are introduced with a focus on organization. In the 7th grade classes, students will take the basic framework and flesh it out with more complicated sentence structures and vocabulary. The 8th grade year is a time of continued expansion and increasing sophistication of ideas.
All classes will use the Holt, Rinehart, Winston series Elements of Language; in addition we will use Winston Grammar cards to learn parts of speech. The vocabulary building program will focus on Latin and Greek roots, and each week will bring mastery of several new word parts.
The honors classes will be responsible for keeping a journal in a composition notebook. This will bolster their confience in writing. Journals will be turned in every three weeks. |
