Journal Assignments

There are thousands of thoughts lying within a man that he does not know till he takes up the pen and writes.  ~William Makepeace Thackeray

Writers write. Writers write down words they enjoy saying. Writers comment on the days they’ve just had. Writers rant about politics and the environment. Writers jot down descriptions of interesting things they’ve seen. Writers complain about their annoying sisters or the neighbor’s evil dog. Writers scribble down story ideas. Writers put down on paper anything and everything that comes into their minds. Writers write.
Keeping that in mind, this year you will be required to keep a journal. This will be done in a standard 200 page composition notebook. Each week you will need to fill at least two pages. What you put on these pages is up to you. I do ask that you date each entry and that you keep the material school appropriate. If you do not want me to read an entry for personal reasons, please write “Do Not Read” on the top of the page and I will respect your privacy. You may include drawings with your entries, but they will not take the place of written material.
Journal entries can include any type of writing. You can write letters; descriptions of anything you have seen, read, eaten, heard; movie, music, book or tv reviews; play by plays of your football games; poems or song lyrics; questions you have about life; creative short stories; advertisements for products you’d like to invent; comic book panels—ANYTHING YOU WANT.  If you’re still stuck, I will post new journal ideas each week on my website.  I will collect journals every three weeks. Incomplete or lazy journals will receive a 75. Complete journals will receive a 95 Those students who turn in a really thorough, creative, and thoughtful journal that goes above and beyond the assignment can receive a 100.

Journal Tip 4/21-4/25--Imagine that you know nothing about science. As such a person, what do you think is at the center of the Earth? Come up with a few theories.
