Dear Parents,
This year we will be introducing the students to the Caldecott Medal winning books through a year-long project. This project will teach them to write a summary of the main ideas of a story. The Caldecott Medal is awarded to the artist of the most distinguished Children’s Picture Book. The picture book is an excellent tool to use in learning how to develop a summary. The list of Caldecott Medal Winners is attached and is also linked to our Third Grade and CKS Library websites. Here are the project requirements:
- Read a Caldecott Medal Winner book
- Secure a pack of 4 x 6 lined index cards
- List the Title (be sure to underline)
- List the author and illustrator
- List the year awarded the Caldecott Medal
- Compose a summary
- Indent
- 4 – 6 sentences stating the MAIN ideas of the story
- May use manuscript - spelling and neatness count
- Draw a scene or character on the back of the index card related to the story
- One card due every FRIDAY morning for a reading grade
- Students are required to check out a Caldecott Medal book on their assigned library day
- Students may use Caldecott books from home and the classroom.
Thank you for your support!
