Class Info
Kindergarten
Overall
We start off the year with a series of activities that are focused on introducing Spanish as a foreign language. During our first quarter together we will be learning “los colores”, the colors, “los números”, the numbers, “el calendario”,the calendar, “la señal de la Cruz”, the sign of the Cross, and “vocabulario básico”, basic vocabulary.
Methodology:
The students learn new vocabulary each class, then it is reinforced during the next two classes. Vocabulary is taught through concrete objects, mimic, corporal expressions and pictures. Songs in Spanish are sung during the year. We celebrate some Spanish holidays and special dates. Kindergarten does not have a specific text book. We work with handouts that reflect the vocabulary learned in each session. There is no homework
Frequency and class duration
Classes are held weekly at 9:00 am for 30 minutes. Kinder Gold has classes each Tuesday and Kinder Red has classes on Thursdays.
Evaluation
Spanish is evaluated through class participation.
How students can learn more Spanish?
Ask you children each Tuesday or Thursday what new things they learned.
Let them teach you those words. Repeat together and celebrate! Use those new words in the day to day occasions, i.e. instead of saying “I want bread” encourage your child to say: “I want pan”. Make your child feel very proud of knowing those words in Spanish. Explain to your child the importance of another language and reinforce that concept on every occasion. If they meet a Spanish speaking person your response would be: “That’s why we need Spanish, to make new friends!
Kindergarten students are wonderful Spanish learners!
First grade
Overall
We will kick off the year by doing a brief review of all the things we learned in Spanish last year. We will introduce command words such as Si/No, reinforce comprehension and oral skills using the number 1-10, the difference between feminine and masculine words and new vocabulary related with school, days of the week, family and others.
Methodology
We use a workbook: Spanish elementary level 1 from Frank Schaffer Publications. In each class I present new vocabulary and review the last lesson. This year we are going to introduce videos from “Español para tí” series and it will be reinforced by handouts. We celebrate some Spanish holidays and special dates. This year the students start to write words in Spanish. There is no homework.

Also, have your child watch some of the great educational TV shows that Univision, Telefutura and Galavision have to offer to young viewers.
Second grade
Overall
We start the year with introducing a new work book which will be our guide during the year. Along with learning new vocabulary we will start dialogues and more writing. Vocabulary will include: greetings, family members, classroom objects, month of the year and, of course, reinforcement of vocabulary previously learned. This year is especially important for the students because they will be evaluated through class participation, written tests and homework as well.
Methodology
We use a workbook from the series “Viva el español”, learning system “A”. In each class I present new vocabulary and review briefly the last lesson, if necessary. This year we will continue to show videos from “Español para tí” series and it will be reinforced by handouts. Students will be asked to do drills between them and with the teacher. We celebrate some Spanish holidays and special dates. There will be homework occasionally.
Frequency and class duration
Classes are held weekly at 11:00 am for 45 minutes. Second Gold has classes each Tuesday and Second grade Red has on Thursdays.
Evaluation
Spanish is evaluated through written test, class participation and homework.
We are going to have tests at the end of each lesson of the workbook. In order to be successful I recommend the following study habits:
- Study the current lesson each day before Spanish class even if we do not have a test. The child will participate more efficiently during class and he/she will have more points in class participation.
- Review the assignment notebook each day after Spanish class. On that day the students will write if they have a test next class.
- They will be no a retest because a failing grade. If your child is going to miss a test, please let me know in advance. Also, if he/she has missed it because of sickness, I will give a test to the student.
- The passing score is 76%
